Te Toi Rangi

Te Toi Rangi is the bilingual unit at Northland College.

Our primary focus in our unit is to ensure that our reo and tikanga are upheld to a standard we feel is rich and acceptable to all as well as being aligned to the practises on our marae within Te Whare Tapu o Ngapuhi.

The name Te Toi Rangi itself derives from the stories of our mātua tūpuna, notably Tānenuiārangi. Tāne for short, ascended into the heavens to retrieve the three baskets of knowledge so that life could be brought to the world. Te Toi o ngā Rangi was the twelfth heaven which held the three baskets – Te Kete Tuauri, Te Kete Tuatea, and Te Kete Aronui. In the acquisition of this name, our students are able to retrace in the footsteps of their tūpuna and gain a deeper understanding of who they are and their purpose/worth. Furthermore, it is about getting our students to understand that they have an important part to play within their own whānau, hapū, iwi and community and their contribution to all communities locally, nationally and internationally.
