Sport at Northland College

All students are encouraged to participate in sporting or recreational activities. Students intending to play sport for Northland College need to consider the following:

Commitment

Participation in sport involves total commitment to the team and coach. Players must be prepared to meet all playing and training commitments. Possible clashes of interest need to be considered prior to joining a sports team. If you cannot meet all your sports requirements, discuss this with your coach before you commit to joining the team.

Attitude

Players are expected to have a positive attitude towards their sport. This means:

  • Participating for reasons of enjoyment and personal satisfaction
  • Being prepared to develop personal fitness appropriate to your sport
  • Being prepared to develop personal and team skill levels appropriate to your sport
  • Not placing excessive emphasis on winning
  • Displaying good sporting ‘sportsperson’ behavior on and off the field
  • Attending all training runs and personally informing your coach if you are unable to train.
  • Meeting all playing commitments

Cost

Where possible the school will meet the costs of participating in sport. Unfortunately it cannot possibly meet all these costs.

  • Uniforms: In most school sports the school provides all or some of the major items  of uniform necessary. Other items such as footwear need to be purchased by the individual player.
  • Equipment: The school supplies major items of sporting equipment required for each code. This equipment must be treated with care and is the responsibility of the individual team and coach
  • Transport: The school has two 11 seater vans that are available to transport pupils to tournaments or games. These need to be booked in advance to ensure their availability and these vans are for use for all school trips. These vans are charged out at 50 cents per kilometer to the users, and it is expected that this cost is covered by the users. Roughly this works out at $ 5. 00 per player on a distance comparable to travelling to Kawakawa and $ 10. 00 per player on a distance comparable to travelling to Whangarei.  Sometimes the school vans are not available and we have to hire Rental Vans, which increases the cost for transport.
  • Tournament Fees: The school pays the Tournament Fees to enter NSSSA Tournaments.

Permission to travel

  • Before a student is allowed to travel on a sports trip they need to have done the following:
  • Been given an EOTC by the Coach, Manager or Sports Coordinator
  • Read the EOTC Forms so that they can answer the following questions:
  • Where they are going
  • When they are going
  • How they are going
  • How much does it cost
  • What do they need to wear
  • Have they organized their own lunch
  • What time do they leave
  • What time do they return
  • By what date do they have to return the Consent Form
  • Is the Consent Form signed by one of your parents/guardians
  • Is the Consent Form signed by you
  • Have they returned the signed Consent Form to the College Office
  • Have they paid for the trip to the College Office

Behaviour

Any pupil who behaves in a way that reflects badly on the team or school whilst involved in a sports activity may be removed from the team. If this occurs the student may not be allowed to join any other team during the same season.

Training

Players who do not attend training will be stood down unless they have a valid excuse.
